Main Influence
Jess Glynne - Take Me Home
Ideas I Would Like To Use/Develop:
- Natural look
- Minimal make-up
- Minimal colours
- Eye line match
- Lip-syncing
- Long clips of performer singing directly towards the camera
- Passion within the performance
- Use of jump cuts
- Use of medium close-ups
Compared To My 1st Draft/Mock Exam:
During the making of my music video I watched Jess Glynne's music video, Take Me Home. From this I took inspiration for my own music video and the images below show how I used similar shots to Glynne's music video.
Image 1:
Both performers are showing their passion through the use of facial and body expressions. As this shot is a medium close up the arms help to show the emotions and passion of the performer. I think this is an effective way to show the audience the passion in which the performer is trying to convey.
Image 2:
These images show a close up with the performers both making a direct connection with the audience. Both performers are lip-syncing and appear with very minimal make-up on. In my opinion the natural look helps to create a realistic connection with audience. The performers look directly into the camera and a close up helps to emphasise this is as it makes the performers face, especially their eyes, connect with the audience.
Image 3:
These images show a change in the narrative and colour tones. In my music video I choose a B/W colour change to show my performer being weak and withdrawn from the rest of the narrative. In Jess Glynne's video , she uses darker lighting to show a change in the narrative. I think both these shots are very useful as they show refection shots away from the narrative.
Image 4:
These images show a medium close up. Both of the performer display the narrative through the use of lip-syncing. I like this shot because it shows the full face and neck of the performer as well as some of the background. Emotions are also very good to show via facial and hand movements because the camera can focus on these specific movements.
Mock Exam Edits
These images show some of the effects which I have used during my Mock Exam/Draft 1.
Additive Dissolve
Black and White
When the artist is not singing I will add a B/W effect.
Transparency
Shows weakness and the artist fading away.
Matte Generation
This effect shows the artist getting ill.
Ultra Key
This effect removed the green screen from behind my artist.

My Mock Exam
This video is my first attempt at a music video. I completed this for my mock exam however I only used my test shots, therefore the video does have some blank elements. I also used images from my storyboard to demonstrate the timings of the shots I haven't filmed.
What I Think Went Well:
- Lip-Syncing was well connected
- Natural look was well achieved
- The shots I used achieved the emotions I wanted to show
- The one location I used showed what I wanted to achieve
- The editing transitions I used were very effective in making my music video look very good
- The B/W effect I wanted to achieve proved to work very well
What I Need To Improve:
- More camera movements
- More camera angles
- Use a range of editing transitions
- Follow the storyboard
- One element of the lip-syncing was slightly out

1st Attempt of Filming
The Green Room
These images show the way in which I set up the green room before filming.
I used the standard three-point lighting system.
These two images show how to set up the lights:

Image 1 & 2 both show my attempt at this form of lighting. I think it worked really well as it created no shadows but allowed the artist to stand out against the green background.
What Went Wrong
The lights were not set up correctly therefore they created a shadow affect along the green screen. This would mean that when I apply the chrome key the green background would not fully disappear.

Health and Safety Grid
During my filming I carried out a Health and Safety Grid.
The grid consist of the following....
HazardsWho is at risk
Controls
Severity of Injury
Chance of Injury
Risk and Control Measures
.
This is a key part to making a music video as it ensures the environment in which I will be working in is safe to use. Also it allows me to be aware and take precautions of any hazards which may result in people becoming injured during filming.

Animatic
Animatic
This YouTube clip shows the first attempt of my animatic. I used the images from my storyboard to the track of Clown and combined the two to create my animatic. This shows my animatic in which I combined my storyboard to the timings if my chosen song. This has been helpful when making my first music video draft.
Screenshots of Animatic
These images shows the screenshots of the making of my animatic. I used the software Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015.
Firstly I saved the images from my storyboard as pictures which I could then use in my animatic. I right clicked and selected import which meant my images would be imported from my documents onto the software. Therefore I could drag my images onto the timeline which would allow my to add the correct images to the correct time frame.
Thirdly I had to ensure the images were in time with the music correctly. To do this I zoomed in on each individual clip and used the blue dragged to make sure the timings of the transition from each image was correct. This is the hardest thing about creating an animatic but the most important aspect as it will make filming my music video much easier.

Audience Research Task 3
10 Questions
This shows a blank questionnaire, which I handed out to my friends and peers. The aim of the questionnaire was for me to find out what I should and shouldn't include in my music video. I didn't ask for a name or age as I these results won't have been relevant. I wanted people to be honest therefore I kept the identity of each questionnaire private.
These images show the response from my questionnaire:
I have found this task very helpful and I shall break down the results to find what people want to see in my music video:

Focus Group
This video below shows myself conducting a focus group aimed at 3 people. These are my fellow peers and the reason I chose to ask these people is because they all watch music videos on a regular basis. Therefore these people are most likely to be my target audience so I need to know what they like and don't like within music videos. I asked six open questions so I could gain an in depth knowledge of what the focus group opinions were on music videos. I also kept the questions generic to all music videos as I am unsure what music video I am going to be creating.
This is the list of questions I asked my focus group:
- In a music video do you think it is important to see the artist and why ?
- What type of music videos do you like watching, abstract, performance or narrative and why ?
- Laura Mulvey believed woman are placed in music videos to be viewed as sexual objects by men. Do you agree with her theory and why ?
- Is it important for women to be a role model within music videos and why?
- Do you think raising a social issue such as bullying, marriage and rape are all acceptable within music videos and why ?
- Music videos commonly match the lyrics and the events of the video together. Why do you think this is and would it make you want to watch the video again ?
Online Survey
I have used a website called Survey Monkey to conduct another form of audience research. This is the link to my survey:
Analysis of Results:
I have chosen to represent my results via a video clip. Within the clip I analyse some of the results which were given to me and I start to construct my target audience from this.
